Meet The Photographers
Bruce Carmichael
I’ve never considered myself a photographer. I was just a kid with a camera that my parents bought for me for $5.00 with a promotion on a cereal box top. I remember it well. It was a Kodak Instamatic 124. The film was pre-loaded in a cassette and it was very easy to operate. Apparently, they were in production between 1963 and 1965 which perfectly matches the time period for Elliott’s Grocery which I would guess was early spring 1966.
I was a boy scout at the time and had many interests including snapping photos. I also had a paper route during those years and I would have been in my early teens. On Saturdays I would walk to the newspaper office in downtown Dartmouth, N.S. to settle my account and I would probably have taken this photograph on my way home. Colour film cassettes were very expensive back then and I’m sure money from my paper route helped with paying for the film and processing. Out of 12 photos taken you were lucky if one or two were keepers so I suppose you could say I got lucky with Elliott’s Grocery.
I would also say that I was very fortunate to have caught your eye with this snap as it will now be displayed for many to view and appreciate. Thank you, Teri Paquette, for giving this photo a new life!

Anne Terriss 1927 - 2017
Anne (Sajiw) Terriss was an amazing person. She had a passion for the arts, most notable photography and the theatre. Anne considered the many friends she made at the Arts Club Theatre as her second family. She raised her children in Kitsilano where in 1967 she captured this image.

Peter Okens
Peter was from Germany and immigrated to Canada in the early 70's. Clearly Peter had a great eye for photography as he snapped this photo in March of 1971 of TTC Bus #27.
Peter is seen here in this photo beholding the print I gifted him in 2023. It's my understanding that he wanted it hung in his dining room so he could enjoy it three times a day.

Stephen Shore
Stephen Shore (born October 8, 1947) is an American photographer known for his images of scenes and objects of the banal, and for his pioneering use of color in art photography. His books include Uncommon Places (1982) and American Surfaces (1999), photographs that he took on cross-country road trips in the 1970s.
I noticed a photo in the Uncommon Places lineup and immediately asked Mr. Shore if he would allow me to paint it. After a long dissertation about why I wanted to — mostly because it's awesome and from my hometown — he simply responded, "Sure."
